10 Things To Let Go Of This Year

I don’t know about you, but I’ve really been feeling inspired to de-clutter my life and my mind. I’m not sure if it the start of a new year, or because I’ve spent too much time binge-watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix. Either way, the start of a new year is an ideal time to release the things that no longer serve you.

If like me you’re ready to make some space in your life, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. Here are 10 things you can check to see if they ‘spark joy’ and if not, perhaps let go of this year.

1. Clutter.

Let’s continue the obsession with Marie Kondo for a mo. You may or may not believe in her ‘spark joy’ approach to decluttering, just use whatever approach works for you. Just get rid of the things you don’t need. That grey top that no longer fits, the books you’ve read and won’t read again. Donate.

Look at your online clutter too. Does your inbox have hundreds of unread messages in it? Unsubscribe to newsletters and notifications you never open and set mail rules to prioritise the emails you actually have in your inbox.

Then have a deep clean to re-energise your surrounding and give you the headspace to look at other areas. Even better make this part of your Sunday GYST routine.

2. Limiting beliefs.

What is in the way of you achieving x,y,z? Is it actually you? I imagine it like carrying around a full, heavy backpack. How can you fit in your dreams, unless you unpack some of the unnecessary “stuff”. Get rid of these limiting beliefs. It’s time to start telling yourself a more positive story.

3. Making Excuses.

Stop finding reasons for why you can’t tick that item off your bucket list, or you can’t live the life you love. There are some things we can’t control, but we have to be honest with ourselves. Are the excuses, actually fear?

4. Imposter syndrome.

Let go of thinking you aren’t where you’re supposed to be. Everything you’ve done has helped you become who you’re meant to be. You got this!

5. Self-pity.

Are you a bit of a “why me”, “why does this always happen to me” kind? I have a tendency to get into this mainframe if things aren’t going the way I feel they should be. Instead, ask what you can learn from the situation. All setbacks are only temporary, but the lessons learned are forever.

6. Thinking it’s too late.

Your dreams matter and everything happens for a reason. Follow your heart and work hard to achieve your goals. More importantly, let go of the need to have it all figured out. What doesn’t make sense right now, will one day.

7. Comparing yourself to others.

In the world of heavily-edited ‘Instagram “perfect” lives’, it can be incredibly easy to compare yourself to others. Yet, comparing yourselves to others is pointless. We often only see the surface of peoples’ lives, and not the struggles they go through every day. We are all on our own journey with our own goal and timelines.

8. Being liked by others.

The chances of being liked by everyone is an impossible and exhausting challenge. Everyone wants different things and most of the time their needs are conflicting with each other. Why do you want these people to like you? Are you afraid that you will be excluded from the group?  Maybe stop seeking approval from others and trust yourself.

9. Saying Yes.

How often do you just say “yes” to something and then feel completely overwhelmed? It is so important to have a balance. Set your own boundaries of what you will allow and how you will allow people to treat you. Before you say “yes”, stop and think. Why are you saying “yes”?

10. Procrastination.

This is one I really need to nail! The minute my ‘to-do’ list feels overwhelming, I will faff and do anything before actually getting down to what I’m supposed to be doing. Tomorrow may never come.  Just do it!

What are you letting go of this year?

I’ve been trying to work on getting rid of my limiting beliefs as well lately, in January I’ve been focusing on more positive thoughts and a more glass half full perspective 🙂
