Book Review: Sane New World: Taming the Mind by Ruby Wax

My friend read this book and found it inspiring and said I had to read it. I have to say, I loved it!

I read this book, sat on a sun-lounger in the garden on a glorious summers day. It took me two hours to read from cover to cover and I don’t think I have ever read a book in such a short space of time!

Ruby explains the science behind our thought processes, the parts of the brain, the chemicals that make us who we are and memory. Ruby explains all these component parts in succinct and entertaining way. I am no scientist or psychologist, but I understood all she said and found it really interesting. Ruby introduces the concept of ‘Mindfulness’ and feeling empowered to change the way we think and the importance of pausing or finding an ‘anchor’, in the process of changing our negative thoughts.Throughout the book you feel yourself going ‘oh yes, I do that’ and it feels more like Ruby is chatting to you, for want of a better way of explaining it. It is like she isn’t just rambling about her own experiences, instead she uses her experiences and learning, to identify with her audience.

As I mentioned, I read the book in the garden. I was sat sunbathing and we had the iPod on in the background and ‘Waves’ (the Robin Schulz remix) came on. What a brilliant summer song combined with the lovely sunny day, my lovely family and the smell of Ambre Solaire sun cream. That memory is stored in my memory bank. I know there will always be times that I will be critical of myself and worry, but Ruby provides us with some very useful pointers in this wonderfully truthful, funny, thought-provoking book.

In summary, the blurb on the back says it all ‘Helping you become the master, not the slave, of your mind, here is the manual to saner living’. The book definitely does what it says on the tin!

Thanks for reading xoxo
